Wow, I haven’t written here in awhile! That’s what working all the time, writing a book, and having an actual life will do to you!
But since I’m here, I thought I’d share a few character profiles for those who have not yet read November Rain or want to know more about the central cast. Starting with my favorite. She’s not the main character or even terribly essential to the plot, but she’s the soul of my book. Meet Mama Sue.
A slave since birth, this old woman has the strength of a lion, coupled with the heart of a lamb. Her many tragedies in life have constructed an unwavering faith in God that shines through her every conversation. She is quick to reprimand but quicker to love. Her wit and wise words of counsel bring insight and hope to impossible situations. And she has a few dark secrets from the past that will linger with compassionate readers.
Here are a few of her words sprinkled throughout the book. I hope you come to love her as I do (hey, she’s real to me).
“The funny thing about livin’ is that we don’t know what’s gonna happen next, but we keep on walkin’ anyway. Jesus aint finished with ya, dear. Remember that He makes all things work together for the good of those who love Him.”
“Smaller skirts comin’ into fashion. Never heard such a barefaced lie. Did ya see your friend Miss Lucy at the last spring picnic? Looked like she was pitchin’ the big tent at the circus, she did.”
“I don’t know why one person bein’ the massa and one the slave, but I know that He’s a-watchin’ out for us no matter where we’s be. He don’t see no color, jess what’s a-livin’ in our heart. He knows what’s best, and He provides, don’t ya be a-worryin’ none.”
“I may be old, but I aint stupid.”
“You will find the strength. You will carry on because ya have to. This be the substance of life. This be why we have a God who never slumbers or sleeps. Take hold of His hand, ‘Liza. Battle with Him ‘til the end. He knows about the evils of hate better than anyone, and He knows how to defeat them. Put your trust in the One who made ya, and don’t ever look back.”
